
DSI-National Youth Service Programme(Open to South Africans) Applications
The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) has launched the National Youth Service (NYS) Programme, a transformative initiative aimed at empowering South African youth through skills development and community engagement. This programme offers young South Africans the opportunity to contribute to national development while gaining valuable experience in the science, engineering, and technology (SET) sectors.
Department of Science and Innovation – National Youth Service (DSTI-NYS) Programme
The DSTI-NYS programme is a key component of the South African government’s National Youth Service Programme (NYS). It is managed by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), under the National Research Foundation (NRF).
Programme Overview:
- Objective: The DSTI-NYS programme aims to instil a culture of community service and volunteerism among young people. It provides participants with skill-building opportunities and practical experiences that enhance their employability and understanding of their role in South Africa’s development.
- Duration: Participants are placed in partner institutions for a 12-month period.
- Support: The programme provides monthly stipends to cover basic needs.
Eligibility:
- Primary Focus: The programme primarily targets unemployed graduates under the age of 35 with qualifications in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
- Other Fields: Occasionally, there are opportunities for graduates from other fields, as defined by the specific recruitment process.
Benefits:
- Skill Development: Participants gain valuable experience and skills, improving their chances of entering the job market.
- Economic Participation: The programme helps reduce long-term unemployment by preparing young people to contribute effectively to the economy.
- Science, Engineering, and Technology Graduates
- Eligibility: Unemployed graduates aged 18–35 with qualifications in science, engineering, and technology fields.
- Duration: 12 months.
- Role: Volunteers will support the implementation of the DSI’s Science Engagement Strategy through placements in partner organizations.
- Communications, Journalism, and Media Graduates
- Eligibility: Unemployed graduates aged 18–35 with qualifications in communications, journalism, or media studies.
- Duration: 12 months.
- Role: Interns will work with mainstream and community media outlets to produce content about science, technology, and innovation across broadcast, online, and print platforms.
Minimum Requirements:
- A relevant tertiary qualification e.g. Science or Technology, Journalism and Media Studies, Communications
- Computer literacy
- Self-motivation and ability to work under pressure
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- Writing and/or radio and television skills
- Good analytical and interpersonal skills
