What Is CACH and How Does It Work? A Guide for Students Seeking Placement in 2026

Every year, thousands of students apply to universities and TVET colleges with the hope of furthering their studies. Unfortunately, many of these students do not secure placement due to limited space, late applications, or not meeting minimum requirements. If you are one of the many students hoping to study in 2026 but did not get accepted, CACH may be the solution you need.

Not securing placement does not mean the end of your academic journey. CACH exists to bridge the gap between students and institutions with available space.

If you want to study in 2026 and have not yet secured a placement, registering with CACH could be the opportunity that changes your future.

What Is CACH

  • CACH stands for Central Applications Clearing House. It is an initiative by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in South Africa.

CACH was created to help students who:

  • Did not receive any placement offers
  • Applied late to universities or TVET colleges
  • Met admission requirements, but institutions were already full
  • Are still looking for available study opportunities

CACH connects these students with institutions that still have space for the upcoming academic year.

How Does CACH Work:

CACH works as a placement-matching system between students and higher education institutions.

Here’s how the process works:

  • Student Registers on CACH
Students submit their personal details, academic results, and preferred fields of study on the CACH platform
  • Institutions Upload Available Spaces
Universities and TVET colleges that still have openings upload their available programmes to the system.
  • Institutions Contact Students
If a student matches a programme, the institution contacts the student directly with further instructions.
  • Student Accepts the Offer
The student then follows the institution’s admission process to secure their place.
  • Matching Process

CACH matches students to available programmes based on:

    • Their academic results

    • Programme requirements

    • Career interests

CACH is ideal for:

  • Matriculants who were not accepted anywhere
  • Students who applied late
  • Students who qualify but were rejected due to space constraints
  • Students looking for TVET college, university, or community college opportunities

Important Things to Know About CACH

  • CACH is free – you do not have to pay to register
