Student Cadet Traffic Officer (Western Cape Mobility Department)

 

The Western Cape Mobility Department is recruiting traffic students for the completion of a Further Education and Training Certificate: Road Traffic Law Enforcement on a bursary basis. This is a structured twelve (12) month training programme that will commence on 08 June 2026 at the Gene Louw Traffic College (GLTC), Brackenfell.

Successful candidates will be placed at various traffic centres across the Western Cape, including:
Worcester, Laingsburg, Beaufort West, Oudtshoorn, Brackenfell, Somerset West, Vredenburg, Vredendal, Caledon, Swellendam, Mossel Bay, George, Knysna, and other surrounding areas.

 

Remuneration

  • A training stipend of R5 000.00 per month will be paid for the duration of the training period. This excludes meals and accommodation.

 

Job Purpose:

The purpose of the programme is to train selected candidates as student traffic officers who will be equipped to enforce road traffic, public passenger, and transport legislation. Candidates will also be trained to provide visible traffic control and policing, promote and ensure crime prevention activities, and perform all administrative duties related to traffic law enforcement.

Successful applicants will be required to adhere to the full terms and conditions of a 12-month contract, which includes practical deployment and a 24/7 shift system when required.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification)
  • Valid motor vehicle driver’s licence (Code B – manual transmission)
  • Must be physically fit
  • Pregnant persons will not be considered, as physical tasks during recruitment and training may pose a risk to both mother and unborn child
  • No criminal record
  • Visible tattoos and body piercings (except females with one piercing per ear) will disqualify applicants as it does not align with uniform requirements
  • Applicants must be medically and psychologically fit for strenuous physical training
  • Must be willing to undergo drug testing
  • Must be willing to undergo fingerprint or ID number clearance via SAPS
  • Must be willing to undergo ongoing fitness and drug assessments during the training period
  • Applicants may be required to undergo psychometric testing
  • People older than 35 years are not eligible to apply
  • Applicants must be well versed in at least two of the official languages of the Western Cape, depending on the deployment area

  • Enforcement of road traffic, public passenger, and transport legislation
  • Provision of visible traffic control and policing services
  • Promotion and execution of crime prevention activities
  • Performance of administrative duties related to traffic enforcement
  • Compliance with all training requirements and operational deployment duties during the 12-month programme

 

Competencies Required

  • Good written and verbal communication skills in at least two official languages of the Western Cape Province
  • Strong interpersonal and public relations skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Assertive and confident personality
  • Ability to work independently and within a team

 

Important Notes

  • Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews at a date and time determined by the Department
  • Candidates must submit all required documentation for verification and vetting purposes
  • Two pre-entry assessments will be conducted:
    • A practical exercise to assess technical and generic suitability
    • An integrity (ethical conduct) assessment
  • Selection will be guided by Employment Equity (EE) targets of the Department
  • No permanent employment is offered upon completion of the programme
  • Any future permanent employment will be subject to competitive recruitment processes in line with DPSA regulations
